Here are today's notes and what we covered for those who missed it. (Feel free to correct anything I may have missed! )

Verbs: a word of phrase that tells what the subject of a sentence is doing, feeling, being, speaking or thinking.

Nouns: are words used to name people, places or things.

Proper Nouns: Has a capital. Names of particular people, places or things.

Common Nouns: general name of a person, place, thing or idea. i.e. book, table, girl, lady, town, city, imagination, school

Collective Nouns: a name given to a group of persons or things. i.e a cackle of hens, a gaggle of geese, a flock of birds, a herd of cows

Abstract Nouns: Things that you can't touch. i.e love, hope, anger, fear

Adverb: describes the verb or adjective


ADVERBIAL PHRASES: Act like adverbs. They tell how, when, where or why something happens.

Place: next door, under the chair, at home, over there

Time: (extent: how far, how often, how long) in the evening, last weekend, at ten o'clock, by midnight

Manner: (in what way, by what means [THE WHAT]) by train, like a soldier, with a knife, like a dream, with a broom

Cause: (why) for that reason, because of bad weather, through mismanagement, due to her efforts

Contingency: (what if, although) in case of emergency, in case of cancellation, they let him play in-spite of their misgivings.

Matter: (what about) "regarding your question..." "....about the situation"

Adjective: A describing word that adds meaning to a noun or pronoun.

Eg: A tall boy. A small cat. She is happy. The clown costume was voted the craziest.

Quantity Adjective: eg: fifty

Opinion Adjective: eg: beautiful, fantastic

Factual Adjective: eg: burnt, fire

Classifying Adjective: eg: old
